Charcoal seems such a benign substance; and indeed, as well as its ancient use as a drawing material, it is used for purification and filtering. More troublingly though is its implication in some wider ecological and geo-political concerns such as deforestation, desertification and urbanisation. It is these aspects I am concerned with in this work.
