artist statement
A lot of the inspiration for the themes and contexts of my work comes from longstanding interests in scientific and sociological themes such as ecology, geology, genetics etc. It may seem that these are rather impersonal and not immediately open to particular soul searching reflection or commentary, however, once the surface of these areas of enquiry is broken, and the depths begin to be mined, connections to what is going on in people’s lives, my life, become more apparent.
I am drawn to pattern and light, and often work with natural materials. I set up experiments and constructions to replicate real processes. I find this offers gateways into understanding that empirical recording cannot.
I usually photograph or film these experiments, because this has the power to give things which are ‘not real’ a sense of authenticity and evidentiary weight as well as decontextualizing them. This indexical distancing also allows me to play with scale and time in a way that presenting the physical object does not.
